Fighting for Our Community

Recently, as the community leader, I collaborated with CRPE, the Boys and Girls Club of Kern County, and Comité Progreso de Lamont to secure a $6.5 million grant awarded to Kern County for the renovation of Lamont Park.

Safer Parks

During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the wells in Lamont became non-functional, resulting in the community’s inability to access water. I diligently pursued efforts to escalate this issue to the county and state authorities, ultimately securing the necessary resources to restore the well’s functionality.

Water Issues

One of my initial volunteer projects involved advocating a street project located on the north side of Lamont that aimed to add two new miles of sidewalks. This initiative would enhance the safety of children as they walked to school and bus stops. Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of the need for more community members like myself to advocate for the safety of our children and elderly residents.

Due to my work with the steering committee of AB617 in Arvin and Lamont, three great organizations nominated my application to be on the DPR’s&nbsp;Environmental Justice Advisory Committee. Additionally, because of my continuous work advocating for safe, affordable, and community water, I was also sponsored to be on the SAFER Advisory Group.

In the Kern County, our working families face daily challenges due to the subpar quality of our roads, bridges. We possess the capability to generate millions of well-paying jobs that simultaneously address the needs of our community by constructing and repairing our deteriorating infrastructure, including broadband internet access to rural and underserved areas.<ul><li>Transfer of State Route 184: I believes that State Route 184 in Lamont, California should be transferred from Caltran to Kern County.</li><li>Reason for Transfer: Residents of Lamont have limited control over infrastructure improvements on their main street, as they are dependent on Caltran funding.</li><li>Proposed Benefit of Transfer: Transferring the route to Kern County would allow for local input and faster improvements to the community’s main road.</li></ul>

Kern County working families face challenges due to poor infrastructure. Investing in infrastructure projects, including broadband internet access, can create jobs and benefit the community.

Let’s make sure that when we’re sick, we don’t end up drowning in debt because of the cost of medication and care. Billionaires and corporations shouldn’t have the power to set prices that leave us financially strained. It’s time to put an end to this by capping the price of medical procedures and prescription drugs to a reasonable rate, similar to what other major countries do.<ul><li>A supported expansion of CalRX to include GLP-1 medications for the treatment of diabetes type 2 as well as an affordable treatments for asthma, seeing that children in Kern County suffer from asthma and related breathing conditions due to polluted air</li></ul>

Capping the price of medical procedures and prescription drugs to a reasonable rate, similar to other major countries, is necessary to prevent financial strain from medical costs.

Farmers know firsthand: we’re experiencing record heat, and it’s happening every year. If we don’t take action, our food, water, and comfortable temperatures are all in jeopardy. Our farmworkers are already facing a higher risk of heat-related deaths, with a 35% increase. I’m committed to ensuring the well-being of our farmworkers and communities, so we can all enjoy a safe and sustainable future.<ul><li>Environmental Justice Advocacy: I committed to holding corporate polluters accountable for environmental crimes that impact communities’ health.</li><li>Health Issues from Pollution: Cancer and asthma are cited as examples of health problems stemming from gas leaks, air pollution, and water contamination in the Central Valley.</li><li>Call for Clean Air as a Human Right: I push for California to recognize the right to clean air, building on the state’s 2012 recognition of the human right to water.</li></ul>

Let’s work together to shield our communities from the harshest weather.

It feels like every paycheck brings a higher cost to keep our families fed and safe. From groceries to energy bills and rent or mortgage, the biggest companies in the country seem to be taking advantage of us. It’s frustrating that politicians don’t seem to stand up against price gouging, especially since they receive campaign donations from companies like PG&amp;E, United Health, and BlackRock, which might influence their decisions. We all deserve to pay a fair price to keep our families safe, and not a single extra penny.<ul><li>Water Affordability: A program should be established to provide financial assistance to low-income families in California for water bills.</li><li>Housing Issue: Goal stop corporations from buying up homes. Corporate landlords and Wall Street are buying up entire neighborhoods, driving up home prices and making homeownership unattainable. Solution: Fighting against corporate ownership of single-family homes.</li><li>California Public Utilities Commission’s Role: The CPUC regulates utilities, determines their rate of return, and is tasked with protecting ratepayers from excessive costs. The CPUC has repeatedly authorized increases in utility rates of return, favoring shareholders over ratepayers despite being required to balance both interests. California utilities claim a capital cost of 11%, while the Sierra Club’s expert argues for a<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qpx5OKhc5TNVMXKODe82sfv1SlNFROef/view?usp=sharing"> 6% rate</a>, potentially saving ratepayers $8.2 billion. The Sierra Club urges the CPUC to prioritize ratepayers’ interests by setting a lower rate of return for utilities. Solution: CPUC will authorize a lower rate of return, making electricity more affordable for consumers.</li></ul>
